Agoston ACS
(Budapest 1889 - Budapest 1947)
Painter and goldsmith. At the Academy of Applied Arts he was studying
under the guidance of professors Samu HIBJAN and Istvan GROH. Agoston
ACS held exhibitions in the Art Gallery several times.The main subjects
of his paintings were the country life and the Hungarian lands.

(Pest 1873 - Budapest 1944)
Painter and graphic artist. From his long study tour he returned home
in 1896.He made several illustrations and posters. He was one of the acknowledged
masters of Hungarian graphic art. He held collected exhibition of his
works in 1922 in the Art Gallery and in 1925 and 1927 in the National
Saloon.

Antal BERKES
(Budapest 1874 - Budapest 1938)
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts between 1889-1894. First he was
painting mainly landscapes, later on, he was making street scenes of Pest.
Later on he changed to "mass production" meeting the requirements
of the art-dealers of his age. His painting "Hungaria Street"
can be seen in the Hungarian National Gallery.

Hermina BRUCK
(Pest, 1865 - Budapest, 1944)
She studied in Budapest and in Munich. She exhibited her still lifes and
landscapes in Budapest as from 1892. In 1913 she won a silver medal on
the exhibition of Hungarian Lady Artists Association.

Karoly CSERNA
(Kunszentmiklos 1867 - Budapest, 1944)
Painter and illustrator. After finishing the School of Model Drawing he
made illustrations. In 1903 he went to a painting study tour to Munich.
Having returned home he painted still-lives, portraits, as well as water-colours
of various parts of Budapest. Several of his works are held in the Budapest
Historical Museum, the Historical Picture Gallery and in the Hungarian
National Gallery.

Adrienne DEAK (Mrs.Hencz)
(Budapest, 1890 - Budapest, 1956)
At the Academy of Fine Arts she was the student of Lajos Deak-Ebner and
Istvan Bosznay. Later she studied animal drawing under the guidance of
Ferenc Marton. In summer she worked at the Sarospatak and Jaszapati artists¹
colonies. In 1938 she won the "Halmos" Genre-Painting prize.
Her oil painting having the title "Still Life" is owned by the
Hungarian National Gallery.

Artur FERRARIS
(Galkowitz 1856 - )
Painter. He studied in Paris, then made a tour to Egypt. He exhibited
his works often in Paris, Vienna and Budapest. He made mainly genre paintings
and portraits. He settled in Budapest and became the favourite portrait
painter of the aristokracy.

Pal FRIED
(Budapest 1893 - ) He studied in Budapest from Hugo Poll and in Paris.
His fully coloured oriental pastels were exhibited in the Art Gallery.
He painted mainly sensual nudes, portraits and exotic pictures meeting
the requirements and taste of the upper middle-class. In 1947 he was invited
to the New York Academy of Fine Arts to be a teacher. He attracted attention
with his rather impressive portraits of popular movie actresses.

Jeno FRIEDLINGER
(Orsova, Krasso-Szöreny county, 1890 - )
He performed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts where Ede Ballo and
Tivadar Zemplenyi were his masters. As from 1913 he exhibited mainly portraits
on various exhibitions.

Richard GEIGER
(Ungvar, 1882 - as per other resources Vienna, 1872 - Budapest, 1945)
He performed his studies in Vienna and moved to Budapest in 1903. He designed
several posters, invitation cards to balls, book illustrations and ex-libris.
He worked also for the Kner printing house at Gyoma. On the exhibitions
of the Art Gallery and the National Saloon he participated with portraits,
landscapes and genre paintings. During World War I. he worked for the
Tolnai World Journal as an illustrator. He had been to Paris, as well,
where he painted mainly the tramps¹ life. He won several prizes on various
graphic competitions.

Imre GERGELY
(Pest, 1868 -... )
After finishing the School of Model Drawing he studied in Vienna and Munich,
and then, as from 1892 he was regularly exhibiting his Italian landscapes,
street scenes, colourful pictures depicting flowers, and those of the
Tunis fairs full of feeling in the Art Gallery. In 1911 for his painting
"Fair on the Franz Joseph Quay" he was awarded a Torley prize
in the National Saloon. Some of his paintings (Astrik Delivers the Crown,
Bethlen Receiving Foreign Ministers, The fall of Ottokar, The Torda Diet)
are now owned be the Hungarian National Gallery.

Adolf HANDMANN
(Hernadi) (Kassa 1873 - )
He studied in the School of Model Drawing. He exhibited his works in the
Art Gallery and in the National Saloon. He settled down in Eger.

Artur HEYER Ede Karoly
(Thuringien 1872 - Budapest 1931)
He performed his studies in the School of Applied Arts in Berlin under
Koch Max. The artists came to Hungary in 1882. First he became known as
a graphic artist and made book illustrations. He held the first collected
exhibition of his works in 1906. He was one of the permanent exhibitors
of the Art Gallery and the National Saloon. In 1909 he held collected
exhibitions of his works in Weimar, Gotha and in the Munich Kunstverein.
In 1911 he won the "Count ANDRASSY Prize" and made a study tour
to Holland, Vienna and Munich. In 1929 he held an exhibition in the National
Saloon (in Budapest). He made a lot of paintings of animals.

Gabriella ISTVANFFY (Mrs RAINER)
(Budapest 1875 - Budapest 1964)
She exhibited mainly paintings of animals at the Art Gallery and in the
National Saloon. After 1945 she made a lot of paintings of animals for
the Ministry of Agriculture.

Jeno KARPATHY
(Debrecen, 1870 - Budapest, 1950)
J. Karpathy performed his studies under the guidance of Bertalan Szekely
in Budapest, and then in Paris and Brussels. He was living and exhibiting
in Belgium for two and a half decades. When World War I. broke out he
returned home. In 1919 and 1921 he exhibited in the National Saloon, in
1924 in the Art Gallery and in 1940 he held collected exhibition of his
realistic Œplein air¹ works in Debrecen (together with Peter Szule). His
paintings "Rainy Weather at Dunaföldvar² and 'Spring" are owned
by the Hungarian National Gallery.

Endre KOMAROMI-KACZ
(Rev-Komarom 1880 - Balatonalmadi 1969)
He studied at the School of Model Drawing, then in Munich and at Nagybanya.
His masters were Ede BALLO, Simon HOLLOSY and Gyula BENCZUR. Thanks to
receiving a scholarship E. Komaromi Kacz made a study-tour to Belgium
and Holland. In 1908 he opened an own atelier. He was a permanent exhibitor
in the Art Gallery and on various foreign exhibitons representing Hungarian
art. He was painting portraits, genre paintings, deeply toned interiors,
figural compositions and landscapes. In 1918 he had a collected exhibition
in the National Saloon. He was highly interested in astrology and music,
and even published numerous astrological articles. In 1924 he organized
an exhibition of his collected paintings in the Art Gallery. He was awarded
many prizes. Some of his works are owned by the Hungarian National Gallery.

Alfred LAKOS
(Szekesfehervar 1870 - Budapest 1961)
A. Lakos studied under the guidance of Simon HOLLOSY and Bertalan SZEKELY.
First he was making mainly illustrations and caricatures, but later he
was engaged exclusively in painting. He exhibited his works in the Art
Gallery and in the National Saloon. He painted figural pictures connected
with Jewish religion (rabbi portraits...) and still lives with old books.

Gyula MADARASZ
(Pest, 1858 - Budapest, 1931)
Gyula Madarasz was an ornithologist, painter and illustrator. He started
to study painting from Antal Ligeti. His pictures depicting landscapes
and birds were exhibited in the Art Gallery and in the National Saloon.
He himself illustrated his significant work written about the birds of
Hungary.

Ilonka MEZEY
(Esztergom 1883 -... )
She studied in Munich under Simon Hollosy, in Dachau, at Heyek and in
Budapest from Ferenc Szablya-Frischauf. She made portraits, landscapes
and still lifes. She exhibited her paintings in the Art Gallery and in
the National Saloon from 1913 on.

Janos MOLNAR Z.
(Cservenka, Bacs-Bodrog county 1880 - Godollo 1960)
He was studying in Munich, Rome, Naples and Paris. Upon returning home
he settled at Godollo. As from 1911 he exhibited mainly still lifes of
flowers and fruits in the Art Gallery and the National Saloon.

Vilmos NAGY
(Budapest 1874 - Budapest 1953)
He performed his studies in Budapest and in Munich. He was the student
of Karoly Lotz. His interiors, scene illustrations reminding of the Benczur
school were exhibited in the Art Gallery. Several of his paintings are
owned by the Hungarian National Gallery. For his painting “The Youth²
he was awarded a gold medal in London in 1908, and in 1921 he won the
prize of the Minister of Education for his picture “Interior².

Antal NEOGRADY
(Galsa 1861 - Alag 1942)
Antal Neogrady studied at the School of Model Drawing under Janos Greguss,
then in the Munich academy. He took part in exhibitions from 1888 mostly
with his watercolours. Between 1893 - 1931 he taught watercolour painting
at the Academy of Fine Arts. In 1904 he exhibited in Budapest, and then,
in 1908 in Arad. Several watercolours of Antal Neogrady can be found at
the Hungarian National Gallery and his self-portrait is exhibited in the
Historical Picture-Gallery.

Laszlo NEOGRADY
(Budapest 1896 - Budapest 1962)
He was the son of Antal Neogrady. At the Academy of Fine Arts Laszlo Neogrady
was the student of Ede Ballo. His naturalistic landscapes and portraits
were exhibited in the Art Gallery as from 1922. One of his most famous
paintings is the portrait of his mother.

Viktor OLGYAI
(Iglo, Szepes county, 1870 - Salzburg, Austria 1929)
Besides theology and philosophy he was most imressed by painting,
therefore, in 1891 he attended the Vienese Academy. In 1894 he exhibited
an oil painting, then in 1897 his album under the title "WINTER"
consisting of 10 copper engravings caused a sensation. In 1903 and
1906 the Esterhazy Prize was awarded to one of his watercolours,
and in 1909 he received the Prize of the Society of Fine Arts. Olgyai
was the chairman of the Hungarian Copper Engraving Artists' Association
and as an art teacher he was working at the Academy of Fine Arts.
He was one of the pioneers of the Hungarian reproductive graphics.
In 1929 a commemorational exhibition was held in the Art Gallery
from his works. Several of his works are held by the Hungarian National
Gallery.

Bela PALLIK
(Nagymihaly, Zemplen county 1845 - Budapest 1908)
He studied painting in Vienna and Munich, however, he was also acting
as an opera singer in Germany and at Tata. Besides portraits (those of
counts Elemer Batthyyany and Istvan Karolyi) he bacame a popular and sought
after painter with his sheep pictures, these were considered as the best
realistic pictures due to which he was awarded with several prizes. Several
of his paintings, e.g. Sheep's head, The Hungry, Lake Velence, etc. are
now owned by the Hungarian National Gallery. He was sponsored, among others,
by count Janos Waldstein, and count Istvan Szechenyi. His commemorational
exhibition was held in 1908 in the Art Gallery.

Emil PAP
(Szolnok 1884 -... )
He was studying in Budapest. His naturalistic genre paintings were exhibited
from 1905. He made also portraits (e.g. that of Gyula Andrassy). In 1921
he had a one-man collective exhibition in the Art Gallery.

Antal PECZELY
(Budapest 1891 -... )
He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and then worked as
an art teacher. He was painting regularly from 1924 on, but was dealing
with graphics and illustrations, as well. He was regularly exhibiting
in the Art Gallery and the National Saloon, and was one of the founders
of the Artists' Colony at Gyula.

Janos PENTELEI-MOLNAR
(Dunapentele, 1878 - Bekesgyula, 1924)
Painter. He studied in Munich, Paris and in Budapest. He achieved great
success with his still lifes. He was the president of the Benczur Society.
He won several prizes and medals. (Wahrmann-prize in 1908, Rudics-prize
in 1909, State little gold medal in 1910, Gold medal of the Kunstlerhaus
in Vienna, State big gold medal in 1915). He held a collected exhibition
of his works in 1907 in the Konyves Kalman Saloon and in 1920 in the Ernst
Museum. Several of his works are owned by the Hungarian National Gallery.

Arpad ROMEK
(Budapest 1883 - Budapest 1960)
He studied on the Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Ede Ballo
and Laszlo Hegedus. With the scholarship of baron Kohner he performed
studies at Szolnok. His works can be found in the capital's collection,
as well as in the galleries of Bombay, Transwal, Belfast and Glasgow.
He was the representative of naturalistic still life painting. Some of
his pictures are held in the British Museum, in the Dutch Royal Museum,
as well as in the American Art Museum. His pictures - Still life with
Book and Old Kitchen can be seen in the Hungarian National Gallery.

Mark RUBOVICS
(Pest 1867 - Budapest 1947)
He continued his studies started in the School of Model Drawing in Vienna
and Paris. Upon returning home in 1891 - together with Sandor Bihari and
Bertalan Karlovszky - he opened a painters¹ school. He was painting small,
naturalistic genre-paintings and still-lives worked out in great detail.
In 1912, 1921 and 1929 he held collective exhibitions of his works in
the National Saloon.

Maria SZANTHO
(Szeged, 1902 - ) She studied painting from Geza Kukan. She made study
tours to Italy and France and had exhibitions as from 1925. She had a
collected exhibition in Budapest, in 1936. First she wanted to become
a musician and so music always appears in the atmosphere and colours of
her paintings, too. Hedonism of Lotz and joie de vivre of Benczur are
combined in her lady figures, idyllic environment of which is further
enhanced by musical accord of rich draperies and colours. She is a characteristic
and consistent representative of naturalistic painting.

Zsigmond TORDAI-SZEKELY Zs.
Tordai-Szekely was active between 1920-1945.
He painted mainly still lifes and landscapes. His favourite subject was
the Gödöllo-park. A lot of paintings of Zs. Tordai-Szekely were sold by
Mr. Solymosi, art-dealar. (Source: Data base of the Hungarian National
Gallery) Geza VASTAGH (Kolozsvar 1866 - Budapest 1919) He was the son
of György VASTAGH, sen. He studied in Munich. He participated in the exhibitions
of the Art Gallery mainly with his paintings depicting animals. In 1920
an exhibition was held in the Art Gallery from his inheritance. Several
of his works are held in the Hungarian National Gallery and some painting
are owned by the Agricultural Museum.

(Rimaszombat, Gömör-Kishont county, 1890 -...)
He performed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance
of Laszlo Hegedus, Ede Ballo and Karoly Ferenczy. He won the scholarship
of Gömör county. As a prisoner of war he got to Turkestan, the colorful
dresses of the people thereof exercised a great influence of his coloristic
style. While being a prisoner he made a career and became the portrait
painter of the Russian social life. In the center of his works there is
the beautiful woman surrounded by colorful drapery and the atmosphere
of his paintings is further enhanced by the watercolour-like easy-flowing
painting mood.

Janos VISKI
(Szokolya, Hont county 1891 -... )
At the Academy of Fine Arts he studied under the guidance of Tivadar Zemplenyi.
He made study tours to France and several towns of South America. He exhibited
his paintings as from 1913. Being deeply affected by the characters and
movement of animals he was painting mainly animals, and was interested
in the problems of motions and forms, as well as in colour effects of
the open-air light. His most frequent model was the Horse. His art sets
out of nature, he remains close to their forms, still, his pictures show
individual strength with an impressionist effect.

Gyula ZORKOCZY
(Nagyroce 1873 - )
He studied at the School of Model Drawing where he obtained a diploma
in art teaching and in the meantime his master was Bertalan Szekely. From
1907 on he exhibited brightly coloured naturalistic landscapes in the
Art Gallery and the National Saloon.
